There’s nothing better than curling up on the couch with a blanket and popping in a movie. There are so many holiday movies out there but there are some better than others. If your struggling to shift through the endless lists of holiday films, here’s a list of Magic Haus Films favorite holiday films to help you out!
Over the last decade or so, “Elf” has become a staple movie for the holidays. This is one of the best feel good, family movies out there. It tells the story of Buddy, a man who was abandoned when he was a child who happens to find his way to the North Pole where an elf adopts him and treats him like one of the other elves. However, Buddy eventually learns that he is not actually an elf. The movie follows his journey when he sets out to find his place in the world. It’s filled with romance, comedy, as well as personal and family struggles. “Elf” is a movie that can bring the whole family together during the wondrous holiday season.
Best scene: Elf has a date on Christmas Eve and it goes went. He became so excited that he busted into his father’s office and the chaos that ensued put us all on an emotional rollercoaster. What started out as a loving moment turned into something quite the opposite.
4. The Grinch
When people think of Christmas, one of the first things that pop into their minds is “The Grinch”. People of all ages hold this film to a high standard. Based off the Dr. Seuss book, “The Grinch” depicts the story of The Whos in Whoville during Christmas time. There is one person however that is not feeling the holiday spirit and that is the Grinch himself. He hates everything about Christmas and the holiday season. You follow the emotional and mental journey that the Grinch goes on. He tries to understand and feel the holiday spirit but it’s a tough road for him that swerves in many directions. This film brings the family together and emphasizes the Christmas message and spirit. It shows that even when things get tough, you should never lose your hope.
Best scene: Towards the end of the film, The Grinch reveals that he is going to destroy all of the Christmas gifts that were supposed to be for the other Whos in Whoville. What happens after he shares this information really shows what this film is really about and the message it wanted to get across.
3. Die Hard
While there are many people out there that might not classify Die hard as a Christmas movie, hear me out for a minute. There are many aspects of the film that convey traditional holiday movie themes. John McClane, who is played by Bruce Willis, is just a dad trying to make it home for the holidays but there’s something in his way. In this case it just happens to be some terrorists. He must fight through it all to get his family to safety, bringing them emotionally and physically together. There are many Christmas references hidden throughout the movie as well. This film might not be the classic family holiday movie but in the end, it stills shares the spirit of Christmas with everyone.
Best scene: At one point in the film, McClane finds himself squeezing through the ventilation ducts of the building. Even though there is a lot of intense drama going on, McClane provides a moment of comedic relief by continually talking to himself and saying many hilarious quotes.
2. The Nightmare Before Christmas
Is it really the holiday season if you don’t watch “The Nightmare Before Christmas”? One of the holiday classics, “The Nightmare Before Christmas” details the desire of Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King of Halloween town, to control Christmas. He is tired of doing the same routine every year so he somehow finds his way to Christmas Town and is mesmerized by all that he sees. The musical film follows him on his attempt of ruling Christmas town. There are many bumps on the road for Jack, which lead to many chaotic situations. There is also some romance thrown within the movie. “The Nightmare Before Christmas” is a perfect holiday film for the whole family to enjoy together.
Best scene: Towards the beginning of the film, Jack makes his way into Christmas Town, and the path he takes stumbling through the town while becoming completely mesmerized by everything in front of him is truly compelling.
When it comes to the best holiday movie, most people would not think that a comedy horror film would top the list but “Gremlins” is a film that goes against that thought. What starts out as a simple early Christmas present from a father to his son, Billy, quickly turns into a nightmare not only for themselves but for their whole town. By not following 3 simple rules regarding his new pet mogwai, Gizmo, Billy must now try to fix all of the problems that was caused while hundreds of gremlins are wreaking havoc throughout the town. Everyone must come together to try and destroy these gremlins. Not only is this film filled with many holiday moments, there’s also drama, comedy, and horror. There is something in there for everyone in the family to enjoy.
Best scene: One of the most iconic scenes from the film is when a gremlin is discovered in someone’s kitchen. Many kitchen equipment’s were used to try to destroy the creature and the struggle that ensued was captivating.
While all of these movies are great and we here at Magic Haus Films love them and watch them every holiday season, one thing that we have noticed is the lack of women in these films. That relates to the main stars of the movies, as well as the directors and producers. Most of these films are quite old but the lack of women in major roles in the film industry is still concerning today. There are some women out there setting the path for the rest of them but we are still a long way from having women equally represented in the film industry. We hope that the next time we make a list, more women will be featured in important roles. We cannot wait for that to happen. Happy Holiday’s from everyone here at Magic Haus Films!
